What Caused the Cancellation of Power Book V? How The Rashad Tate Spinoff Ended

Many viewers are curious about the reasons behind the cancellation of Power Book V: Influence by Starz, as well as the status of the planned Rashad Tate spinoff.

Power, a six-season crime drama created by Courtney A. Kemp in collaboration with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, has garnered a massive viewership on cable.

Power has established itself as a highly successful series, receiving both critical acclaim and commercial success. The show was incredibly well-received and even led to the creation of a media franchise.

In the Power universe, there are three spinoffs: Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and Power Book IV: Force. Regrettably, the planned Power Book V will not be joining them. Power concluded in 2020, but Power Book III: Raising Kanan is currently being broadcasted.

Nevertheless, the spinoff’s 2024 finale will mark the definitive conclusion of the Power universe — at least for the time being. The main focus of the show revolves around James St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick), a charismatic yet ruthless drug dealer who attempts to juggle his criminal activities with his newfound aspiration of owning and managing a nightclub.

Referred to as “Ghost,” St. Patrick gracefully navigates through ever-changing economic alliances, all the while prioritising the well-being of his family. In later seasons, and in several spinoffs, politician Rashad Tate (Larenz Tate) proves to be a significant challenge for Ghost.

Could Power Book II: Ghost potentially shed light on the reasons behind the absence of Power Book V: Influence? In 2022, Starz announced the cancellation of Power Book V: Influence. However, Kathryn Busby, the network’s then-president of original programming, did not provide a specific reason for this decision.

Upon initial observation, the decision may appear perplexing. In addition to the Starz mega-hit Outlander, Power and its three spinoffs are among the network’s most popular, well-reviewed, and highly-watched offerings. Considering that all four Power shows and spinoffs will conclude by 2024 (with Raising Kanan wrapping up in February 2024), it would be reasonable to explore the possibility of an in-universe replacement. It could be particularly intriguing to focus on a well-established Power universe character such as Rashad Tate.

Curiously, it seems that the cancellation of Power Book V: Influence may be connected to one of the other installments in the franchise, Power Book II: Ghost. Politician Rashad Tate, who made his debut in later seasons of the parent show, appears as a council member in multiple episodes of Power Book II: Ghost. While Influence primarily focuses on Rashad’s story, his significant role in Ghost helps to effectively conclude his character arc.

It might be more beneficial for Rashad Tate (and the Power universe) to consider continuing with an existing installment rather than pursuing a completely new series, such as Power Book V. Are there any plans for additional Power spinoffs? For those who are curious about how to watch Power and its Book spinoffs in order, the existing shows might be the only ones that fans need to consider.

Starz has not made any official announcements regarding new entries since the cancellation of Influence. Deadline has reported that there may be a London-set Power spinoff in the works, although Busby refrained from confirming or commenting on the theory.

“What I appreciate about Power is the opportunity to… successfully create a spinoff,” she mentioned. “…Which, if circumstances allow, we would be delighted to do again.”

Currently, viewers of Power will have the opportunity to witness the conclusion of Power Book III: Raising Kanan during its third and final season in early 2024.
