The wild scenarios and interesting characters that populate the world of Starz’s Power have led many to believe the show is based on specific true events and real people — chiefly star Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.

Although 50 Cent strives for accuracy in portraying characters and storylines, some embellishments are added to enhance the dramatic impact.

However, Power and its subsequent shows have garnered success from audiences due to its refreshing and well-received approach to the tropes and conventions of the crime drama genre. Throughout the Power universe, viewers have had the pleasure of getting to know a wide range of characters and witnessing the resolution of numerous storylines.

One character who has truly captivated audiences with his on-screen presence and compelling development is Kanan Stark, portrayed by the talented 50 Cent. Kanan’s portrayal in Power made him a beloved character, as viewers were drawn to his cunning and strategic nature. Nevertheless, the extensive focus on the character by the producers led to speculation that he might be a real person or inspired by one.

Power is not a true story, but it draws inspiration from 50 Cent’s life before he became famous. Although Power Book III does not have a storyline or character that directly mirrors real events or individuals, The New York setting of Raising Kanan and its emphasis on the main character’s difficult upbringing in a drug-infested environment draws inspiration from 50 Cent’s own personal experiences. There is a significant distinction between the two individuals.

Kanan chose to portray a luxurious lifestyle by engaging in drug dealing, which ultimately led to his tragic demise.

On the other hand, 50 Cent experienced a life-altering event when he was shot, which served as a wake-up call. He then proceeded to achieve his success through legitimate means. In a 2015 interview with MTV, 50 Cent shared, “The series has personal elements that make me feel more connected to it when I watch it.”

Despite the presence of shows like Power Book III: Raising Kanan, this particular series distinguishes itself by having someone who was intimately involved with the lifestyle depicted working on the project. While Kanan may not exist in reality, the philosophies and methodology of individuals similar to him certainly do.

Why do so many people believe that “Power” is based on a true story? It is widely believed that Power is based on a true story due to the realistic portrayal of various subjects across all four shows. In addition, the presence of 50 Cent suggests that the show may draw inspiration from his widely-known experiences with drug trade in Jamaica, Queens. Although Power isn’t centred around 50 Cent, series creator Courtney A. Kemp shared that the character of Ghost drew inspiration from the rapper as well as her own father.

During the interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kemp shared, “Ghost’s character is a blend of my father and 50, and the central question of the series is, ‘Does our past determine our future?'” The real-life sources of inspiration not only created a captivating protagonist, but they also added depth to the beloved characters, making them feel like genuine individuals.

As a result, many people believe that Power is entirely rooted in reality. Power Book III: Raising Kanan continues to surprise audiences with its unexpected plot developments, while also captivating viewers with its well-developed characters and immersive world-building.
